Presentation 1:
“Over-the-Top” Internet Broadcasting – What to Know, Why You Need to Embrace It.

OTT refers to the delivery of video content over the internet to viewers who can access it on a wide range of devices including computers, tablets, smart-phones, streaming boxes and internet-enabled TVs and Blu-Ray players. Major OTT content providers include YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, VUDU, and Amazon.

What is the role for ISPs like Comcast and Verizon, who cannot control what OTT content producers send through the internet to viewers. Can their on-demand offerings compete or are they reduced to simply being “pipes to the internet”?

Nick Gold, Director of Business Development for Chesapeake Systems and the evening’s presenter, believes traditional broadcasters need to have a presence in Over-the-Top content delivery if they are to grow.

Presentation 2:
KINBER – PA State Fiber Optic Network

The Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research is a non-profit coalition of Pennsylvania’s education, research, healthcare, economic development and other non-profit based communities.

PennREN, the Pennsylvania Research and Education Network, is KINBER’s first project that will deliver a statewide platform for connecting its members through facilities-based fiber optic networking. PennREN will initially light over 1,600 miles of fiber on a middle-mile network that will connect over 70 locations.  Bill Weber, VP and CTO of WHYY Public Media, presented.
